Polyamide (PA) · PA6 is an elastic fiber that regains its original shape after being subjected to stretching. In the field of polyamide polymer powders, only information on nylon 6 and 6,6 fibrous materials can be found.

What is Nylon PA-6?

Nylon 6 commonly as Polyamide 6, falls under the category of thermoplastic materials within the nylon polymer family. Within its molecular chain, a recurring amide group (-CONH-) is present. This molecular composition imparts a semi-crystalline structure to the polymer, endowing it with outstanding mechanical characteristics. Notably, Polyamide 6 exhibits high tensile strength and impressive impact resistance.

Nylon is becoming increasingly popular in 3D printing. It's well-known for being tough and strong, which makes it great for making things that need to last and handle a lot of use. You can use it with different 3D printing methods, including FDM. People use nylon to create things like clamps, hinges, and tools. It's also handy in special jobs within the car and airplane industries.

How Is Nylon PA6 Produced?

Nylon 6 is produced through the ring-opening polymerization of caprolactam. The primary method involves heating caprolactam to 250 degrees Celsius and introducing approximately 4% water into the reaction. Caprolactam contains a carbonyl group, and in the presence of water, the oxygen of the carbonyl group gains a proton from a water molecule. Consequently, the oxygen atom acquires a positive electrical charge. As this is an undesirable state, the molecule undergoes rearrangement, leaving the positive charge on the carbonyl carbon atom.

In this process, a nucleophile, such as OH–, attacks the positively charged carbon atom, leading to the opening of the caprolactam molecule's ring. This opened segment has the potential to induce the opening of another ring, initiating a chain reaction known as ring-opening polymerization. During this polymerization, the amide bond within each caprolactam molecule is broken. The active groups on both sides of the opened ring form two new bonds, integrating the monomer into the growing polymer backbone.
